Faculty Web Server (urban):
How to update your web pages using Netscape Composer and SSH Client (page 2)

Setting up and using Netscape Composer to edit and save your page

1. Make sure that Netscape is set to provide relative links to all embedded images and so on:

Edit - Preferences: In the Preference window, click the + next to Composer and then click Publishing; in the Publishing Preferences window, make sure that both the "Maintain links" and "Keep images with page" checkboxes are checked. You can leave the default publishing location items blank, since you won't actually be using the Publish feature.

2. Create a subfolder on your PC for the web page you are creating (e.g. C:\My Documents\website\CV-MainPage):

For any pages that involve multiple files - in other words, that require image files as well as the html file - it is probably a good idea to keep the page in its own separate subfolder (with all its component files). This will organize your website on your PC so as to prevent confusion when using SSH to upload your page. In contrast to when you can use Composer's Publish feature, when you must use SSH, you will have to know exactly which files must be uploaded in order to update (or create) each page on your website. (If you don't know how to create a subfolder, consult anyone with a bit of experience with Windows.)

Advisory Note: You need not create a separate subfolder on urban (the server) for each web page - in fact, it may not be a good idea to do so. Netscape Composer's Edit Page feature saves you from having to figure out which files go with which pages in the download direction. Many people put all their pages in one folder on the server - e.g. "public_html". There may, however, be good reasons to organize your website into subfolders, each containing multiple pages relating to a particular topic. My advice here about creating a separate folder for each page applies only to organizing your web-page files on your PC - where, by the way, you should always keep current versions of all your pages, as a backup in case something happens to the server.

3. Use Netscape Composer to edit your page. When finished, do not try to use the Publish feature. Instead, select Save As from the File menu in order to save the page to the folder on your PC that you have created for it.

In the Save As dialog box, make sure that the filename given is correct.

Explanatory Note: If you had opened the page into Composer by using Netscape Navigator's "Edit Page" feature, and if the html file's correct name on your website is "index.html," and if the URL with which you invoked the page only gave the folder name rather than including the filename, then Composer may try to give the file the name of the folder rather than its correct name.
