Procedures for Paper Rewrites
You have the option to rewrite your paper assignment (the letter to a public official) and submit it for a new grade. The better of the two grades you receive for the paper (the original and the rewrite grades) will become the paper grade component (25%) of your overall course grade.
Follow the directions and rules below very carefully. Failure to do so means you will forfeit the opportunity to revise and resubmit your paper.
1. The rewritten paper must be submitted to your discussion section instructor when your discussion section meets on November 29th (Wednesday), November 30th (Thursday), or December 4th (Monday). No extensions will be granted for any reason - don't even think about asking. Note that this differs from the policy on exams or on the initial paper, where a valid documented excuse will be accepted.
2. You must return the original paper, but not the original supporting articles, with the paper rewrite. (The exception: if you did additional research, attach copies of new source materials.) Having the original on hand will allow the grader to compare the two to determine whether you have responded to his/her criticisms. If you do not return the original paper at the time you turn in the rewrite, the rewrite will not be accepted. Do not expect us to contact you in search of a missing original; the responsibility lies with you. Attach the original securely to the rewrite.
3. The rewrite should contain full citations for all sources. Failure to cite properly will lead us to reject the revised paper. You will not be given an opportunity to correct this, so be sure to do it properly.
4. You may not change topics without the express, prior approval of your discussion section leader. This is a revision, not a new paper.
5. As per the course syllabus, no rewrite will be accepted if the original paper was submitted late without an excuse that we indicated was valid.
6. Paper rewrites will be returned to you with very minimal comments and a new letter grade. You may discuss the basis for the grade with the discussion section leader.
Please note that we are available to assist you as you revise your paper and to answer questions.
