Instructions for Paper Rewrites

You may rewrite your paper up to the last day of classes, May 12th. Please submit the hard copy in class no later than May 12th or (better) e-mail the rewritten paper to me by midnight on the 12th. No papers will be accepted after that date for any reason. (Please note that no extensions will be granted for any reason whatsoever; I will not accept documented excuses, however valid.) If you gave me a hard copy of the original paper, you must give me a photocopy of the original with my comments on it by the last class meeting on May 12th. I need the original for comparison purposes.

Please identify the file containing the rewrite as follows: "Yoursurname.POLSC 214 rewrite.doc" or (for those using Macs) "Yoursurname.POLSC 214 rewrite.rtf" Mac users should save the document in rtf format before sending it.

The rewrite is just that - a revised version of your paper. Do not change the topic unless I explicitly advised you to do so in my comments on the original paper or we agreed on a change in conference.

You are responsible for all errors in the original paper, whether or not I flagged them. So reread your paper with great care and/or ask someone else to proofread it, too

I will make no comments on the rewrite but I will assign new scores and return it via e-mail.

In assigning the paper grade, I will give double weight to the rewrite. This approach gives you a greater reward for rewriting the paper than the original stated policy of averaging the two grades. In some cases, the difference may be sufficient to affect your final course grade. If your rewrite grade is lower than the original, I will not count the rewrite. Simply put, the rewrite can only help your grade, and it may help your grade significantly. Call that a selective incentive.
