Regina Miranda, Ph.D., Professor, contact email: regina.miranda@hunter.cuny.edu

Dr. Miranda received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from New York University. She joined the faculty of the Department of Psychology at Hunter College in September of 2005 as an Assistant Professor.

Lillian Polanco-Roman, M.A., Doctoral Student

I am a doctoral student in clinical psychology at The Graduate Center and City College of New York, CUNY. I obtained a BS in psychology at Fordham University and a MA in psychology at Hunter College, CUNY. I am interested in how cultural experiences impact mental health treatment seeking behaviors and risk for psychopathology. I am particularly interested in depression, suicidal behavior, and non-suicidal self-injury among racial/ethnic minority and immigrant youth. My research examines the relation between cultural stressors, ethnic identity, depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. More recently, I have explored the interplay between cultural stress and cognitive vulnerability (i.e., hopelessness and rumination).

Mani Garcia-Lesy, M.A., Doctoral student

I am a doctoral student in the CUNY Health Psychology and Clinical Science program based at Hunter College. I received my B.A. and M.A. in Psychology from Stony Brook University. I am interested in improving access to physical/mental health assessment and interventions for Deaf and deaf-blind individuals - drawing on biopsychosocial theory and methods. Specifically, my research is focused on (1) clarifying how patterns of both positive and negative self-focused thought can influence physical/mental health; (2) better understanding the role of mindfulness and movement literacy in health and well-being; and (3) using psychophysiological measures to develop better tools for assessing clinical needs and outcomes.

Julie Slotnick, B.A., Research Assistant

I am a post-baccalaureate student in Psychology at Hunter College. I received my B.A. from Columbia University in the City of New York, majoring in Comparative Literature. I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, and my research interests include trauma studies, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, particularly in the context of mood disorders such as major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. I also have an interest in the growing field of Narrative Medicine.

Natalia Macrynikola, B.A., Research Assistant

I earned my B.A. from the University of Georgia and have a professional background in health communications. I currently facilitate the development, implementation, and evaluation of a campus-wide suicide prevention program at Hunter College, funded by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. I am interested in studying the underlying mechanisms of affective disorders and helping to create programs that reduce mental health stigma and promote healthier communities. In the future, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.

Claudia Ramirez, Research Assistant

I am a senior at Hunter College with a double major in Psychology and Sociology. I plan on continuing my studies in the mental health field. I am interested in both cultural experience and age as factors in mental health well being. Specifically, I am interested in how suicidal ideation and depression vary across race/ethnicity and throughout the life course. I plan to pursue a Ph. D in School Psychology in the near future.

Syliva Pogorzelska, B.A., Research Assistant

I am currently pursuing an MA in General Psychology at CUNY Hunter College with a concentration in Basic and Applied Research. Previously, I received my BA in Child Study from St. Joseph's College and volunteered as a student teacher in schools throughout Brooklyn, where I worked mainly with children from low socioeconomic homes who were eligible for special education services. I am interested in studying the ways in which individuals ascribe meaning to their everyday experience and how this process influences the development and treatment of affective disorders. I am also interested in research that informs policy decisions to improve the lives of individuals who may otherwise lack access to appropriate mental health care services and support.

Guadalupe Bermejo, Research Assistant

I am an undergraduate psychology and sociology major and McNair scholar at Hunter College. I plan to continue my education at the graduate level, studying clinical psychology in order to further understand and improve mental health issues for people of Latino ancestry. Specifically, I plan to conduct research in anxiety and depression, with a focus on children and adolescents.
